Confucius institutes make sure they aren't exposed to funny ideas and their phones monitored abroad through wechat. At my university they all lived in a bubble, in their own lectues probably even taught in Chinese. I don't even know why they bother to waste the money coming here

went to a live short course on start-ups and the chinese girls in our class stuck pretty much only to themselves. it was really hard to get them to join extra-curricular activities in our free time. 2 of them had a very good accent in english, almost perfectly american, that surprised me a lot.

It is kinda obvious though. Why wouldn't they support their government? On the whole China has got ALOT better over the last 20 years in terms of prosperity, quality of life.. Of course they only achieved it through trade with western companies turning a blind eye to tech transfers, authoritarianism, etc

also, western nations need to step up their own freedoms if they want to criticize china, westerners are ONLY allowed to criticize the government (but not to do anything about it), the west probably has more political prisoners these days if you count people who lost jobs or were arrested for online jokes, for noticing increase in crime with multiculturalism, for misgendering someone etc etc, i really doubt you could lose your job in china for calling someone a correct gender
it is also easier to start a private business in communist china than it is in the west, from what i hear

polling data from independent western sources, harvard did one which showed an 80% approval rating. The obvious retort anytime this gets brought up is that they are just brainwashed into liking their government and propaganda definitely plays a part in it, but is not enought to explain such high numbers

Some chinese kid who was the son of a company owner in China was in my entrepreneur class in community college backi in 2018 promoting a line of underwear they were making and was very friendly and talkative and wanted to get to know us. But yea I see them all around New Haven and if they know English they don't speak it much and just don't interact with anyone cept their own.
