I've seen this argument before. But even in comics, anime etc. where it has nothing to do with the comfort of actors the tape strips are ubiquitous. I think lots of people are just genuinely this clueless about how things work. Their understanding of bondage is based on other mainstream entertainment and so a vicious circle ensues.
