I thought it was grape juice, but it was astringent and bad

Canadian here, while our climate is shit for wine we do produce amazing ice wine, which is done using the leftover grapes after the winter. The freezing of the grapes concentrates the sugar and it yields a very sweet wine that is drunk cold after the meal.

Spain makes very good wines, who doesn't enjoy a good Rioja?
I would imagine the French pedigree would def count for something
Mexico's best wines are from Cali as well

No just good marketing.

None made locally, but we can get foreign wines at decent prices due to wineries bribing the government to make the wine tax much lower than other alcohol types.

>none made locally
Locally as in what? Your town?

Yes, specially Malbec

Thanks! Though the store where I got it had a pretty bad selection in general

No problem

And if you want a good Rioja, I can recommend either Coto de Imaz

I spoke about wine for a few hours with a guy at work. Considering I have only drank sweet Washington State Riesling for cheap from Costco, he gave a lot of tips for my flavor palate and college student budget.

1. Stoller 2019 Pinot
2. Ice wines
3. Kerner Alto Adige (white wine)
4. Chablis (Chardonnay aged in metal barrels from Burgundy)
