It's an Asian thing. Here in my country you can't just call random people only by their name. You must use honorifics, and in English the closest word for this are sir, mister, madam, etc.

because of british colonialism. our ancestors had to acknowledge their british masters with respect by addressing them with "sir". blame the anglos.

He calls the teacher sir, which is what we do in Englishspeaking countries as well, sir and miss, so he seemingly uses it in place of teacher in this case.
