Apart from having a high GDP per capita, the population never really enjoyed any of that wealth. Even immigrants to argentina had higher literacy rates.
Landowners, and the elites opposed industrialization, and kept argentina a backwater, unequal, playground for these landed elites.
By the interwar period, Argentina was already in decline, if not earlier.
