I previously posted this but the thread died soon after so here goes again:
I would like to have a discussion about this. What do we think the upside down actually is based on the information presented in the show?
Is it:
>literal hell, or some magical equivalent
>an alternate universe that diverged at some point in the very near past due to invasion by the mind flayer
>a snapshot of the real world created by eleven's contact with the demogorgon at the start of season 1
>some kind of abstract manifestation of the collective unconscious of humanity
It's probably the single biggest question I have about the show, along with how exactly the demogorgon and the mind flayer fit in with it. Having finished the first seven episodes, what do we think the upside down actually is? Share your headcanon.

I disagree. Obviously we'll never get a wikipedia tier in depth explanation of what the upside down is, but I'm pretty sure the writers have stated they have a relatively defined mapping out of the upside down and what it is. Based on this season, especially episode 7, the show is also clearly moving towards giving a more in depth explanation of what the upside down is:
>Nancy finds her diary in the upside down which shows it came to be as a snapshot of 1983 when the gate opened
>We get massive exposition from One/Vecna about how he came to be and what the upside down looked like when he fell into it
etc. The upside down lore is getting fleshed out and I am more than happy about it.

Lost took place on a magic maguffin island with lots of backstory and lore. My point? Both shows had cool backdrops but the writers were more interested in who was going to hook up with who. Or at least the reddit crowd was, and that's who they give the fan service to.

But I disagree, unlike lost the showrunners AND the audience (both reddit and us and everyone) are clearly interest in the upside down as a concept. The fact that this season has focused so much more on the mechanics of the upside down is proof of that:

>finding the diary
>showing how the lamp communication system actually works from within the upside down
etc. It's not just this random thing that the showrunners use as a vessel, it's an entity which is being fleshed out and if you can't see that I don't know if we're watching the same show.
