Why do movies always depict Mars as a rust-brown when it doesn't look like that at all?

So it looks more exotic instead of like a normal desert I'm guessing

It's weird to me seeing a oven-baked desert place on Mars and realizing it's colder than on antarktica during the midday.

Someone explain this to me. I thought no atmosphere would mean everything would be illuminated but the sky would be black with all the stars visible, like on the moon?

It does have an atmosphere, it's just extremely thin and leaks into space constantly because Mars doesn't have a magnetic field
