The director took it seriously as a story instead of treating it like a "comic book movie" like MCUshit does now. It's true all the parts of it that people call camp nowadays don't hold up, but for its time it was an unbelievably serious take on the character.
It's also why nobody has been able to make another good Superman movie since. Nobody is willing to actually take the character seriously. Every sequel or reboot has been focused on reacting to other movies, or this movie itself.
