They're at the intersection of important countries. They're very close to Germans; very close to the French; and very close to the English. They were also Austrian and Spanish for some reason. In the old days we were one of the few free places in Europe. As the first modern republic we got tired of catholic oppression. Founded by pirates. We were egalitarian (so you didn't need to be some nobleman to make it). So people came here to innovate, publish and make money.
We're located in a good spot between France and the UK (and now Germany as well). We had to deal with water for thousands of years, which made our water infrastructure top notch when it became relevant.
Also, we're a practical people. Who won't bullshit you. Making us reliable partners.
