Yeah, the nazis really misunderstood it. The whole movie is about why inequality is bad. Hitler saw it and thought "Wow, this is literally me!" even though he was more akin to the guys feeding people to Moloch than Joh Freder.

imo the message of the movie was that there needs to be a managerial class and working class, and that they need to get along for society to prosper. There also will always be people who hate society and want to subvert and destroy it from the inside.
That seems like an easy message to manipulate for fascists, socialists, communists, and capitalists all and one alike. I can see how so many people were able to use it for their own ends.
