Japan never had a high culture. China probably did have great works of art but they’re either lost to us completely or they don’t capture modern interest. Historically, Chinese seem to have valued painting almost as much as Westerners have.

art served a different purpose in china, it's mostly an escapist thing, historically china has no middle class, no huge group of people who wants to overtly acquire culture as a display of wealth, good art is passed among the literati as a form of respect, hence all the famous paintings has a whole bunch of stamps on them

Realism is not the only mode of painting. In fact, I prefer East Asian abstract style to trillionth uninteresting run-of-the-mill realistic painting.
