Is this show really supposed to be all that miserable? Most episodes have plenty of light-hearted moments and even the drama is often played with some amount of cynical humor. I have a friend who said it was so incredibly depressing that he needed to watch something funny to unwind after some episodes but after watching both seasons I just don't see it. ffs there's even a stage play

Its because the show is really good at conveying the feelings of the characters and provides context for how the characters' personalities are.
So when shit goes down, you are almost experiencing it in the same way they are. And some episodes get extremely bleak.
So even if there are lighthearted moments, most of them feel bittersweet because you know the fundament that those moments are built upon is fragile and on the verge of collapse.

I mean sure, these people all have mental issues but it doesn't come across as so tremendously crushing most of the time, so I don't think it's that good at conveying feelings. There was a lot of build up towards something heavy going down between Jules and the jock guy but in the end it just all kind of....works out for the best. A lot of it is just teen drama, too.
After a while you just start to realize that this show will never actually show something ending up badly for anyone and that everything will work out eventually.
Yeah, this doesn't help. It's just a group of friends who all have mental illness and who are cunts to each other.

Even the traumatic backstories didn't feel all that bad. The worst is maybe Jules who was abused at home I think. Rue's dad died but that's something that happens to a lot of people. In a way I guess the backstories are not unrealistic.

this one is realistic though, have you seen kids today? Only one who constantly dressed super weird was Maddy, she looks like a skanky superhero. This reminds me of that guy from that loveshy doc that realized his friends were complete losers and their philosophy was only going to keep him from finding someone, so he left their group and called up a girl he dated in high school.
She was a fat asian chick (he was white) but she still had a crush on him so she was happy to get back together. The chick filming the doc even tried to be a total cunt and sabotage him by telling the girl about his postings on the loveshy forum, but the chick didn't give a shit and was supportive of him "expressing his feelings and frustration."
