It's basically the only reason (or at least the primary reason) why Furries become Furries in the first place. They hate what they look like, and decided to get a "fursona" to make up for what genetics didn't give them.
A similar phenomenon is people who choose to have digital avatars instead of profile pictures that look better than what their pictures look like.
This documentary doesn't really explore this aspect, I guess because they didn't know or understand it, but it was a total missed opportunity.
