Because the FA-50 has proven itself in as a Light Combat Aircraft, and they serve as proper defensive auxiliaries to support real fighters. War in the air nowadays is all about having enough missile busses in the skies. Since Malaysia is not attacking anyone I doubt they need that much MRFs

if your poor performance 'light fighters' are built to operate long range missiles and have radios to get data links to AEW planes they can still be useful in aerial warfare if they keep their distance.
t-50 can take off with 6 aim-120\derby-er missiles and fire them on targets at maximum range while letting dedicated fighters do the closer range fighting. but im not sure malays have AEW planes that are capable of doing this.
