I think the torture porn people were actually the Christians expecting a Ben Hur type of Jesus interpretation of the story with all the nice moments. I don't think they expected to see it depicted how it was. Same people who were shook by Saving Private Ryan because up to that point they'd seen movies like Kelly's Heroes about WW2 which are tame and silly.
