Because, like everything else in this world, it is becoming a point in the American Culture War and therefore it has became politicised.

If you say "hey, I want walkable cities", you will get hordes of chuds pilling up on you while screeching how you want to take away their cars that they do not own and their roads that they do not use, if you say "hey, cars are needed", you will have hordes of incels piling up on you while screeching how you want to kill the planet and how you are racist.

In reality, many of the American cities are walkable and friendly to on-foot travel but anti-walkable people want the cities to be concret hell holes and the anti-car people want to portray the cities as concrete hell holes so they can lobby for more features.

"Walkable" cities are catered to tourism from first world countries like the US.
If you want to be an economic powerhouse you have to use cars

Lot's of sidewalk space, minimal parking spaces, no car zones, bike lanes, bus lanes, trams, many many bus lines, hyper optimised signalisation in car trafic and lots of smaller stuff like roundabouts and shieet.

Cars and walkable cities aren't mutually exclusive, they are mutually exclusive with 4 ton, 5 meter, beyond EU standard width pick up trucks with like-brand-new beds.
