I’m genuinely curious what this general was like when they spent an entire season with Mike in a concrete lab talking with a character that got killed off Jimmy losing his license only to gain it back at the end, and whatever even happened in season 5 I can’t remember.

Kim kinda holds a grudge against him for belittling her for telling her that Jimmy needs help (similar to Kevin's "you could do so much better than him") while in reality it's exactly what she loves about Jimmy and she probably still is a little butt-hurt about the hard time he gave her at HHM despite the fact that she owes everything to him. That's the point. Howard doesn't deserve this. At this point we shouldn't even be rooting for Kim and Jimmy. Also they aren't doing this for the lulz, they want the sandpiper money. On top of that Jimmy brushed of his guilt in killing Chuck (sabotaging his insurance triggered a series of events that led to his suicide) on Howard (for cutting Chuck out of HHM). Kim herself feels guilty about the part she played in Chuck's demise ("all I think we really did was tear down a sick old man") and Howard is the perfect scapegoat for that, just like he is for Jimmy. She also clearly gets off on pulling scams with Jimmy.

I don't want to criticize the show, but the truth is, the story never mattered all that much to me.

This scene hurt me so much! Howard carefully dressing himself down to the shining of his wing tipped shoes on a motored brush. He then leaves his room, enters the kitchen, and proceeds to meticulously arrange a marvelously crafted cup of coffee for his beautiful wife. Throughout the segment, Howard clearly demonstrates expressions of strong devotion, whether in his eyes, speech, or actions. Howard is a deeply caring and loving husband.
To contrast, Howard's wife stalks into the kitchen without so much as a glance in his direction. She carelessly dumps a portion of the coffee arrangement into a thermos, and the remainder down the sink. Upon hearing about Howard's ongoing Jimmy predicament, she barely acknowledges his concerns, and deftly states that she made dinner plans without him. She then proceeds to leave the house, no goodbye, and leaving Howard by himself...
Saul and Kim have plans for Howard, the past few episodes have made this quite clear. And while yes, I did feel for Howard, when his good friend, Cliff, continuously (and wrongfully) gave him the cold shoulder, I had always presumed he had some sort of support system in place... but no, he's totally alone!
