Sunset Blvd

What's the best neo-noir?

Kino. Planning on rewatching it soon.
>What's the best neo-noir?
Dunno, don't care.

This one. Also Taxi Driver is the best neo noir.

For me, it's Out of the Past. I also really love this and a few others. Maybe I should make a noir 3x3

Might as well post my top ten (including neo noirs because why not?):
10. Out of the Past
9. Blade Runner
8. The Long Goodbye
7. Vertigo
6. Ace in the Hole
5. Notorious
4. Touch of Evil
3. Double Indemnity
2. Taxi Driver
1. Sunset Boulevard

I feel bad not putting Maltese Falcon on here. I also need to rewatch The Third Man because I haven't seen it in like 15 years.

bump

My nigga. Richard Widmark is really underrated, and this movie is fantastic

Top 3
>Double Indemnity
>Murder, My Sweet
>Kiss Me Deadly
Favorite Actors
>Richard Widmark
>Robert Mitchum
Favorite Actresses
>Barbara Stanwyck
>Lizabeth Scott
>Veronica Lake

this one is listed as a filn noir but I have yet to see it
mentioning because the premise seems interesting, like a proto hitcher with rutger hauer except more realistic ( which was my main complaint with the hitcher)
anyone seen it? thoughts?

This one is in my list but I haven't seen it yet. I wonder if it's similar to Detour (which you should watch if you haven't already).

I've seen it. It's nothing special. It's enjoyable, but that's about it. It's only noteworthy because it was directed by a woman

>Detour
thanks for the recommendation
yeah I was afraid it was hyped in the reviews because of "see, women can direct too" feeling they gave me
still, enjoyable is better than nothing so I'll be seeing it
Does Night Of The Hunter count as noir?

It does, but just barely. The movie has a certain childishness, a theatricality to it. The protagonists are two children, and Robert Mitchum plays a wonderful villain, but hardly one with that much screen time.

yeah it feels like a fairy tale, but I love it
I'm fairly certain pic related counts

Closer to a horror/thriller no? But my impression of noir is the stock cliche which isn't the case for everyone.

I really need to get more into European noir. I've mostly seen Carol Reed's work, but that's about it. Speaking of, it's weird how he made two excellent movies that I love (Odd Man Out and The Third Man, of course) but also one of my least favorite noirs (if you can even call it that), Fallen Idol

I dropped The Killers. Glacial pacing, and I'm not the biggest Burt Lancaster fan out there. Great list overall tho

Underrated:

Raw Deal (1948)
dir: Anthony Mann
camera: John Alton

TOUCH OF EVIL

Is it just me or Fritz Lang's later work nothing special? Sure, he made history with M and Metropolis, but most of his noirs are mediocre or dowright bad, like Woman in the Window

I like it for having my man William Conrad in it. Also Ava Gardner is a total smoke show.

People don't talk about The Sniper, D.O.A., Pitfall and Please Murder Me! enough, so I'd say those are pretty underrated

>Is it just me or Fritz Lang's later work nothing special?
No it's not just you, but I do like Woman in the Window and Scarlet Street but that's more because I love Eddy G Robinson, one of the all time greatest actors imo.
Name a better user of hand gestures, I challenge you.

Why can't jewlywood cast manly fat guys any more?

Attached: Broderick Crawford dispensing justice in The Mob (1951).jpg (864x662, 58.47K)

There isn't, and he's pretty good and steals the show, but Woman in the Window might have one of the worst endings ever put to film, and Scarlet Street was a snoozefest

Hands down, the best.
