He lost it by 2015, majority of syrian army are sunni conscripts and they all hate him so they flee and join with the opposition, alawites are minority and they only take higher officier jobs, iranian thats why assad rely on shia iranian and afghani miltias proxies ,technically damascus shudve fallem by 2016 ,but russia saved assad ass ,and now that russia is out of the equation, and with the opposition rebels having a morale and reason to fight to free the country from corruption and humiliation by assad family ,and the economy being completely torned to shreds ,and literally all syrians wanting him to leave even alawites ,then u do the maths
