Generation 1-3 (or 1-4) were really popular in my country (in Europe). But at least from my own experience, it just became too many Pokémon for me and I eventually found something else.
It's probably the same with a lot of other people. Everybody knows Gen 1-3 and old merchandise from that time, especially the games and トレカ is really expensive now.
I still play the Silver edition from time to time.
