Communism Requires all means of production to be controlled by workers. Means of production means the ability to create to something. So ideas, all types of love, gay straight, transexual any form of self expression, any free speech, to be allowed in order to check the leaders of said communism. This is communism 101. Communism isn't really used to refer to the original writings of Marx and Engels. It was the manifestation and interpretation of these ideas by authoritarian command economy states in the 20th century, that's what gives communism its bad reputation.

Marx's ideas may seem antiquated now, but back then he was the most rational leftist. He came from a time when every other socialist and anarchist had his head up his ass and was living in la la land with utopian ideas. Marx in a sense gave the left a materialist framework to work with which, being built up from Ricardo and Smith, was at at the forefront of economic thought. The Marginalist theories didn't develop until later.

Nobody, not even online tankies, give much of a fuck about what Marx actually wrote. When you get into him, you find he's actually really scatterbrained and all over the place, and his theories evolve over the decades. The communist manifesto, for example, was considered by Marx to be wrong in his later years. His Critique of the Gotha program even gives argument to the idea that Marx was becoming a bit of a social democrat in his later years.

Das Kapital, despite being wrong, is a masterpiece though. But it's like reading a technical book on computing published in the 1960s. The subject matter is so antiquated that it's a bitch to follow.
