Prolonging European control over Latin America would have helped the region a lot. They were Zimbabwe-tier in their shift from "Racist Imperial Colony" to "Kill Whitey!" Stable government would have gone a long way in helping those regions develop their own functional domestic systems before gaining independence. The recurring story of Latin America is the tragedy of immense potential being wasted because of stupid leadership.

Probably related to how Spain and the Conquistadors basically imposed a kind of feudalism on their precious metal colonies, whereas Northern America had something more modern, which encouraged careful investment and the development of a middle class etc. The model the Spaniards imposed laid the foundations of extreme inequality and resentment, which has led to major instability and political polarization
