The original exchange rates for these older currencies like the pound sterling are from how much each unit used to exchange for in silver so no not really. The exchange rate for the euro was devised to represent the value of the currencies it was replacing. This ancient history doesnt really matter and the exact numbers for the exchange arent the point, what matters is how much of the currency spenders have and what the forecast for the exchange in the future is. Right now the Euro is being sold off en masse for dollars, making the reserves in euro being held worth less, reducing import spending power for euro holders and making non euro holders purchases in euros cheaper.
