There are plenty of rules that apply, unwritten or not very clear, in which you may fall if ou are unaware, and from which you can escape only by paying. The locals know those rules, of course.

Either you buy an e ticket beforehand and scan it when getting on or your tell the driver where you want to go and pay with cash or contactless. If you don't do either then you can't get on the bus.
