To meet our climate goals, the cabinet wants to reduce the number of people who uses gas to cook so they can switch to electrical cooking. Guess how our electricity is generated! 50% natural gas, 25% coal, 25% other (including "muh windmills" that this country is so proud of). There's also been a discussion about having nuclear power plants for over a decade (we have only one now). Funnily enough the entire left, including our Green party, opposes nuclear energy and has done so for a decade. And their argument is incredibly hypocritical.

I think there's a majority here that's at least for keeping the 3 remaining NPPs running longer, but the green minister doesn't care, he wants to shut it down at the end of the year.

It's because Germany has a shitload of coal, in Ruhr specifically.
Which is why all the important industry is there by the way.
Poland has coal in Lublin and there's a lot of deposits in the western Poland, Silesia is important for instance.

Now connect the dots, add geopolitics and figure out why Germany might be interested in Polish coal deposits.

Do they still use it? Coal is pretty inefficient, not to mention the pollution.
We have had plans to move away from the coal for a while, but it's probably not happening any time soon. Miners are still a farily large group that keeps getting coaxed by the current government, and we don't really have anything to replace the coal with, unless we start getting more gas from Norway or build nuclear.

I wonder if this relates to France being a nuclear superpower. They traditionally had relatively few coal reserves, so that might've provided an incentive to seek out alternatives faster than the UK or Germany.

but they're just not as retarded as Germany and pretty keen on remaining strategically independent, that's why they invested heavily in nuclear

Our current government/oppostion is fine using nuclear energy for medical purposes and defence purposes but using it to power homes thats too far.
