Economically and politically, the United Kingdom is fully the equal of the EU (except for France, which by itself is equal in power to the UK), Russia, and China and the US.

In fact, given its links to Canada, Australia and New Zealand, it would not be inaccurate to say, that Britain is in fact a civilisational state rather than a nation, similar to the likes of the US, China and India, and is a distinct entity from the rest of Western and European civilisation. The history of Britain can be traced back more than 3000 years to its foundation by Brutus of Troy.

Essentially, nothing has changed from the situation 100 years ago, except that the UK is now no longer the most powerful country in the world, but one of severally equally powerful super states, France and the UK are still independent and significant poles in global affairs and should be regarded to be at least as powerful as the US and more powerful than China, Russia and Japan

Hell there are sixth generation immigrants that keep in touch with people in their country of origin. Italians had a way especially of making sure they traced back, for example.
