She instinctively turns the scabbard around instead of drawing the sword downwards with the cutting edge upwards, thereby leaving herself open and vulnerable to enemy attacks. She does not have the true samurai spirit.
But it looks cute.
This is what American soldiers saw when they charged Iwo Jima.

SHIELDS BRING DISHONOUR
They did during the earlier ages of their history as pointed out
They still did during the Samurai Period (1000s-1800s AD), except:
1) In the start of the period, your average lord's warriors were so few and each man had to perform any possible role required of him (i.e. as skirmishers, line fighters, ambushers, flankers, etc.) and as such, your average Japanese warrior was burdened with a lot of equipment. Your average bushi carried with him a polearm, his bow & quivers, and 2 swords. Their's nigh almost no room for a handheld shield there. So shields would only be brought in whenever they needed them like in sieges or some shit.
2) Later on in the 1400s-1500s when lords' armies balooned to the tens of thousands, which allowed Feudal Armies to have specialist
roles instead of having warriors do everything, Sengoku Era armies ascribed to the East Asian/Chinese Infantry doctrine of having shield bearers carry large shields to protect those without shields (i.e. Musketeers, Pikemen, Archers, etc).
