Ok anons who have ACTUALLY succeeded in learning a second language fairly fluently, how did you do it? How woild you recommend doing it for someone it wants to do it as quickly as possible (1-2 years or less)? Obviously it would be handy to hear from people who didn't grow up being surrounded by their learned language and actually learned in a fairly rapid period from basically zero. I'm an anglo learning a couple romance languages now but have also dabbled a bit in languages very different from my own and intend to focus on them again soon.
Move to that country. Or watch a million comedy sketches from your favorite group. When you're laughing your brain picks up common phrases and the rhythm of casual dialogue a lot faster, probably because of the motivation to understand what they're saying. Literally triggers dopamine the more you learn.
