The problem between Israel and Palestine is very, very simple and easy to understand: Israel was created on land that was already occupied by another people, i.e., the Palestinians. In order to create Israel, the Zionist movement had to dispossess and displace the native inhabitants of the land; those native inhabitants feel, understandably, that a great injustice was done to them and they have resisted their displacement and dispossession ever since.
During the creation of Israel (and even before), hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were driven off their land by Israel (or what would become Israel). Back in the 1980s and 1990s, the PLO recognized Israel and has proceeded ever since on the assumption that the occupied territories would become the basis of a sovereign Palestinian state. However, Israel has not reciprocated; the Israeli right wing is committed to settling all of occupied Palestine and, since the 1970s, every Israeli government has enabled growing illegal Jewish settlements on Palestinian land. Today, there are more than 600,000 Jewish settlers in the Occupied Territories and many observers believe that this has effectively ended the possibility of a two-state solution. In 2012, the Palestinians declared their land in the OT, Gaza and East Jerusalem a sovereign Palestinian state. About 136 countries, representing 85% of the world's population, recognized this state. Thus, technically, Israel is now illegally occupying and settling the sovereign territory of another state.

the word palestine comes from the romans, it was the name that was given to the region called judea in the roman empire after the failed jewish rebellion.
Why was that name given? Around the areas of ashkelon gaza and ashdod, on the coast, there was a group of greek invaders called plishtim or philistines in english, from the word plisha in hebrew, meaning invasion. (note, palestinian and the plishtim are not ethnically or genetically related, they're two different groups) The philistines and the jews often fought against each other, going back as far as stories in the bible of fighting between the two. And the romans named judea after them, palestine. as a final 'fuck you' to the jewish rebels, who they promptly exiled into the diaspora. And with rome being basically the biggest power in the world and a cultural power house, creating maps and books, the name judea slowly died out, and the name palestine stuck around, named after a group that doesn't belong there, that is neither related to jews or palestinians.
