The military junta took power before the Cold War, in the 1930s. They were pro-German, anti-American. Not a myth or a coincidence that a lot of Nazis fled to Argentina after WWII. Everyone in the world got fucked by the Great Depression, but Argentina couldn't ever really un-fuck itself because of shitty government.
Navigable rivers overlaying nice agriculture. No serious military threats on hard to defend borders. Plenty of resources. In terms of their natural advantages, Argentina is basically like a miniature USA in a lot of ways. Which is why they could still be great if they pulled their heads out of their asses (same for usa).
Argentina was the 4th richest country in the world during WWI. And they didn't directly participate in either world war, draining their blood and treasure, like the Europeans did.

but imo everything started going to the shitter when the founders fathers tried to imitate the Homestead Acts that they had seen it worked really well cause it gave the inmigrant a connection with the land.
they wanted to recreate this with the millions of inmigrants that were starting to came to argentina. That way they would populate the country and also creating a low and mid level agrarian burgoise.
probalem was that the oligarchy lobbied against the law and they ended receiving not the best land (shit quality land). so instead of millions of new owners and workers of land, they ended receiving millions of proletariat...
