There's a subreddit called ABCDesis which is meant to be for South Asians born in the west but a lot of 1st gen South Asian immigrants and also Indians post there and they have completely different experiences and opinions which often causes them to get into fights because they just can't understand how growing up as a disapora leads you to develop in a certain way

Idk if it's an age thing (I'm 26) or I'm severely out of the loop but I only hear about kpop on Any Forums. That it's booming in popularity and all the kids love it and whatnot.
I have yet to hear ANYONE talk about it in real life, not even zoomers. I see no kpop t-shirts, hear no kpop music anywhere I go, I don't see asian college kids dressed up like kpop stars, nothing.

I met my teenage cousin who was born and raised in NA recently and the way I understood what he was saying he was treating being Filipino as something that makes you unique or original from everyone else which I don't mind. he grew up in different circumstances that's why he thinks that way

My experience with East Asians is that a lot of them hate being treated as if they were different and some of them were desperate to be seen as white
My theory is that the older the diaspora the more likely they are to treat their heritage as something that makes them special or unique
Also I had a 1st gen filipino friend who loved to tell me a lot of weird shit about the Philippines, like about muslim terrorism, filipino comedians who mocked chinese people in his skits, filipino mythology, filipino food, etc
