I want Puerto Rico to be a state and I wanted to make a Puerto Rico thread because they like good threads about them. They are based people. Discuss.

Yes

Me too. Also I hope you guys take floridas tourism industry from them because I really hate that state and went them to suffer.

Dont we all hate florida?

I hate peurto ricans. Ruined alot parts of nj and nyc

Thank you :D
I don’t know whether I support being a state or independence, on one hand, independence is potentially more profitable in the long run and we wouldn’t have to pay any federal taxes, on the other hand, statehood is a fat safer bet and I don’t trust our politicians to not pocket any cash they get and be competent in any way whatsoever. That or plunge the island into Rafael Trujillo Dominican style authoritarianism or Cuban/Venezuelan dictatorship should we choose to lean left

Americanbros, why Puerto Rico and DC weren't elevated to state yet?

Posting without wifi, now the flag should show up

DC is meant to be a limbo land and most Americans don't know Puerto Rico exists

Found the tranny.

They were kind of split until the last 3 years. Now its very possible. Depends on republicans. They have formally asked to become a state. If you did a poll of Americans in the states they usually come out now around 70% for.

What percentage of Puerto Ricans want independence vs statehood (are there any other options)? And what’s the territory’s HDI and wealth compared to the states’?

DC was explicitly founded with the purpose of not being a state. I think it should be anyway, or folded into Virginia.

Also DC requires a constitional Amendment to join. Peurto rico can join a bunch of ways but the most likely is the House passes a motion by majority then biden signs off then the senate passes it 50-50 with the vp breaking the tie. It would become a "state" then de facto. Dc requires a super majority which will not happen in the senate due to the constitutional amendment.

I didn't meet anyone who was pro-independence when I was in PR but I did meet some people who wanted to stay a territory for tax purposes. Not being a puerto rican myself I'm against it, I get a strong feeling it would just lock in wins for democrats in national politics unless the republicans could bribe PR voters with something better

Which one, bros?

Quiero emigrar a Puerto Rico con mi dinero ahorrado y quiero casarme con una linda mujer boricua. Me gusta la musica de Tito Rodriguez y Tito Puente.

According to the most recent referendum in 2020, a little more than half want statehood. It’s been this way for a long time however, and these referendums never amount to anything since the decision ultimately lies with congress. We don’t have any real say in whether or not we become a state or independent. As for HDI and wealth, I think we have a lower HDI and GDP than every other state in the US but higher than any other Latam country, but I could be wrong on that

Its already been formally requested. So the ball is now in the congress hands. See
Theres like 6 other ways it could happen but its very complex. State house legis branches, govs, possible execiutive orders being overseen by scotus going to congres or state houses. Its just insanely complex the other ways and would end up courts step by step.

The big thing is it was formally requested by pr.

They’ll just go with the top.

With covid we'd use federal dollars to reopen those pharma plants, give tax breaks and pour money in to build everything up. The pharma plants up and running are huge industries

>I want Puerto Rico to be a state
Same. They've got enough people and the majority want it so I don't see why they shouldn't get statehood

Is congress still working on this or are they too busy with Ukraine?

I hope they get independence, we don't need anymore shitholes.
They are beyond help.

Dale, nos encantan los europeos :)

This is what I'm wondering. We let go of the Philippines and Guam doesn't have a big civilian population, why did we never let go of Puerto Rico? Still kinda want them to be a state though

Republicans keep stalling the bills. They are terrified if it becomes a state the democrats will take it and the republicans will lose any chance at the senate or house. We have added states because of republicans for decades man.

No te preocupes muñequita, voy a visitar Puerto Rico muy pronto en mis vacaciones. Si me gusta allí, ciertamente emigraré.
