Hersey was really the first to bring affordable, mass produced chocolate to the American masses at a time when most chocolate was considered fancy and imported from Europe at high costs. A whole lot of people in this country had never tasted any chocolate before, so they didn't know better.

Yes, during WWII they had to invent a kind of chocolate that was immune to melting so it was shippable to soldiers over seas. Thats how m&m's were invented.
