could've been so hadn't they invented anime. what really makes it difficult is just how detached from english it can be. you'd normally think that learning a language is just a matter of knowing a bunch of words and nailing down grammar and that's exactly the approach most beginners have to their first second language but like everything in life it's way more complicated than that. japanese is the last language to be a 1:1 translation to english.

there's thousands of then but you can brush them off if you focus on learning the words kanji (the moon runes) form instead of individual kanji. after some hundreds of words you will start to see some kanji are more common than others
