Unlike Canada, Mexico has a good climate for growing marijuana, and a good geography for smuggling cocaine, heroin and meth from south america to the USA. This focus on one resource fucked up their economy, as well as the extreme increase in violence.
Also Canada has a lot of resources like fossil fuels and lumber.

Eh, that's not really true. Mexico is still among the best LatAm countries and they get a shitton of US tourism.
Also Canada's population is simply closer to the US economic core. Vancouver is historically closely tied to San Francisco and Seattle. The rest has natural resources I guess.
