Green areas are fine. Yellow areas you should keep your head on a swivel. Red areas you don't go there at all.

dark green - quite good, safe, upper middle class/upper class
lime green - good, generally safe, middle class/upper middle class
light green - ok, middle class
yellow - downtown, mostly avoid, especially at night
orange - mostly avoid, lower middle class
red - basically avoid, it's the most rundown area of the city

green - developed part of the city, much less danger than the rest
yellow - developed but more dangerous
orange - yeah you shouldn't really go there, but it's mostly fine
red - no reason to go, dangerous to extremely dangerous gang-dominated, mostly poor people (some few exceptions)
*favelas not included, but even the green areas have some, which would be red
