I don't understand how he's failed so badly when Signs and The Sixth Sense are really good.

Spielberg has a giant ego on him behind his nice guy demeanor.
He probably threw every stone he could onto Shyamalan's path to greatness after he saw that headline, at least partially resulting in his career lull.

It's interesting but heavily flawed. In the greater scheme of his filmography it's more notable for being the breaking point of his career where he's openly shitting on critics and casting himself as some kind of Messiah, which naturally bit him in the ass when the movie was a big flop.

he put his heart and soul in the mermaid movie and after the critics were that cruel about the village, and it, he decided his only focus would be box office totals.

he probably was blown away by his first 3 films. but m. night's downfall is his own fault.
