I know most people don't take the First Order seriously, because the ST lore is so badly done. But I remember there was a certain fandom consensus (at least between TFA and TLJ), that the FO was a communist organization.
Yes, JJ uses Fascist/Nazi imagery, but it's just surface-level stuff. FO ideology is more similar to the USSR than actual Nazi Germany.
Bear in mind that the New Republic is portrayed quite negatively, in both the movies and the books.
