I’m an American who lived there for 8 years and worked/spoke in all Japanese. The country is amazing from an everyday perspective. Great cities, trains, polite people, it’s safe, fun mindless hobby things to do. The only issue is there’s always the looming feeling everything is going to shit. Much worse than even the US which I used to be much more critical of. It just doesn’t feel like there’s much of a future there especially if you want to raise a family ect. Most of my highly educated Japanese friends were baffled why I was “wasting my time” there. I don’t really agree with the idea that you can never integrate into society there. I never really had any issues nor did I face the gaijin seat on trains people mention here. Beautiful country, don’t regret going there, but it’s worrisome how things will be in 30-60ish years there.
