The EU today ruled by law that all electronics sold within the European Union will be required to use USB-C. This includes (but is not limited to):
Tablets E-readers Headphones Headsets Earbuds Digital cameras Portable navigation systems Keyboards Portable speakers Handheld video game consoles
In addition, all electronics sold in the EU will be required to use the same voltage in their chargers, so that all products can be charged with a single charger. This is slated to save the public more than 250 million euros and reduce the total amount of electronic garbage with 11k tonnes per year.
The tech giant Apple will be hit especially hard because they have made large amounts of money from selling lightning-to-USB-C cable adapters that only works with their own products. From today onwards, this is no longer legal.
All electronics companies have until 2024 to phase out all prior charging cable formats, while laptop companies have until 2027 to completely shift to USB-C.
