This is bs, there’s always been a shitload of anti communist sentiment in conservative states especially during the Vietnam war. Most Americans didn’t give a fuck about black people dying during the 60’s let alone some jungle Asians halfway across the world. The places where you would see this type of behavior is in big cities like New York.

It was mostly on TV, little was said to them personally. For much of the war, there weren't much in the way of protests either.

The most unrealistic thing about this movie is the idea that this obviously tranditional, conservative sheriff would be hostile to a white vet. In real life, he'd probably have taken him straight to the diner and bought him lunch.

That's largely true but some WWII and Korea Vets looked down a bit on the Vietnam vets as that war was seen as a loss and embarrassment for a good decade after the war. It was only the Stallone and Chuck Norris films that engendered sympathy towards Vietnam vets , albeit in a cartoonish fashion.
