For those who aren't familiar, the reason we are doing this is that we literally do not have the government infrastructure to process everyone at the border, which includes people who have been more or less in limbo for the 2 years since covid closed the border. The current immigration system was designed in the 90s to tailor mostly to male migrant seasonal workers from Mexico. The current inflow is largely asylum seekers from around the world who have chosen the southern border as their port of entry.

Comprehensive immigration reform, the title of the federal legislation package that would include modernizing immigration and asylum processing, has been delayed by Congress for *over 20 years* now. This isn't a new issue -- the border crisis is something we hear about perennially, as each seasonal wave of migrants comes in and we are too fucked up to even kick them out with any expediency.
