The division between India and East Pakistan (Bangladesh) was done on a religious basis.
Ethnicity in South Asia doesn't matter. A Hindu Bengali hates a Muslim Bengali and vice versa. Thanks to Islamism and Hindutva, the religion line is blurring out the ethnic lines even faster.
Westerners might find this hard to understand because they haven't dealt with multiple religions in their own lands until today

they are the cause of partition. they caused the direct action day, when Muslim bengalis started conducting a giant pogrom across Bengal murdering every non Muslim. It was then the British government decided to split the country before they leave to stop the violence. Although the British govt was dickless as well and did nothing to stop the violence even though the military commanders kept asking to give the order to send in the army in Bengal. Instead hundreds of thousands died, raped and were murdered and left to rot in the streets of Bengal.
