My family name is a job description so anywhere in the german speaking regions

My great-great(x15) grandfather had a Hanoverian placename when he immigrated, but his grandchildren improperly Anglicized it in the early 1700s, so now it has no real meaning but is rather unique.

They tried to change it to a relatively common Anglo last name that sounded similar, which other families from Germany who came over with the same original last name also did, but my ancestors chose a very 'unique' spelling of it such that anyone who has my specific last name is guaranteed to be descended from them.

my surname most recently seems to come from East Sussex, but further back comes from around Fife I think. it's very uncommon so it's easy to see the areas where it's most concentrated.
