I've been watching james since 2006. This was easily his best episode in a long time. I thought the beginning of the video was really passive aggressive and thought it was his way of attacking the criticism. But then I realized he was trying to make good on what his fans criticized him and made a legitimately funny and hilarious episode.

It was "good" in the original C64 release (and sequels), because it was technologically impressive at the time, and people in 1987 were a lot more forgiving of shit controls than they frankly should have been. It is stone cold unplayable now. The control scheme is a fucking nightmare, everything has to be pixel perfect or you die, and the worst of all are the enemies that get back up five seconds after you kill them.

The only thing it really needed to be actually good instead of "good at the time" was better controls. >stick moves ninja >fire button attacks, fire + direction jumps >collect items by touching them >cycle through items and use them with keyboard buttons That's all it needed. Instead it's this bizarre clusterfuck where you have to jerk the stick in diagonals to do basic things and in the original version you don't even turn around automatically when you move, instead you have to manually turn your guy by rotating the stick through intermediate positions. It's a fuck and a half.
