The first two books and movies were simple and fun children's mystery/adventure stories with an interesting setting. The rest take themselves and their teenage drama too seriously

actual childrens stories based on the structure of traditional victorian childrens stories. there is a sense of wonder about everything, even the dangers.
3rd book/movie just instilled this over arching sense of paranoia into the series. not comfy.
