The difference now is that it was once possible for an institution to be apolitical. The ACLU, for example, once safeguarded the basic truth that mechanisms for challenging power are the only way a democracy can survive. Now they openly support "hate"-based censorship. Journalists are partisan cheerleaders or propagandists. Corporations have all picked a side. Corruption scandals are completely partisan and the parties spend all their time and taxpayer money trying to arrest their political opponents.
