I mean if they really wanted they could exclude the federation all together and just do a prequel miniseries on the Founders and the Vorta/Jem'Hadar or the Klingons or the Romulans. Similar to Rogue One. They could also do something similar to Voyager instead they could go even FURTHER OUT (I'm talking it would take a 3000 year journey at max warm) where it is a known suicide mission which would make for an interesting dynamic with character development.

Well in their defense if Kurtzman is running the project it's doomed as he has proven he gets everything wrong. The only good nuTrek was 2009 Star Trek.
I don't mind if they do an entire storyline taking up a season or if it's just episode of the week format as long as it's good. I just think its a cop out to say there are no more new ideas they've done everything; no, theres plenty of stuff they could do that could be good. I'm sure people were saying the same after TOS and TNG but DS9 was pure kino. How about this? A mirror universe series

My perfect Star Trek show would be an anthology series where accomplished sci-fi writers could tell their own stories. You create a sandbox for these people, you give them tools, and let their imaginations run free with said tools.

Do it the way it was done on TNG. Gene Roddenberry provided the writers with a manual (what the warp drive is, how phasers work etc.), you give provide them the tools, and let their imaginations run free.
