Back when their resistances meant something they were one of the best races to counter spell casters as a warrior. Coupled with Woad you could easily rush them down. They also come with +10 to axes and blunt weapons, if you tag either of those for favorite skills, as well, you can start the game with ~60 in a combat skill.
