Hinduism is just a catch all term for Indian folk religion. Like the Chinese, Indians have deities who they pray to. Most of these deities are regional, so the Tamils have their own deity, the Marathis their own and so on. These are ancestral deities. But there is also schools of philosophy like Advaita, Nyaya, Samkhya, Yoga, that Indians believe in which ultimately derive from the Upanishads and the Vedic corpus which deal with the more difficult questions of life such as existence, metaphysics, rebirth, soul etc.

Cultural nationalism has increased in the past decade. Religion has merged with nationalism in India, which is easy to do in Hinduism becuase the Indian Nation is also a deity in Hinduism.
